Two Fires Burning North of Hotchkiss

Two wildfires are currently burning north of Hotchkiss this afternoon. Both fires are believed to be caused by lightning as the area received numerous lightning strikes during the past 24 hours. Smoke may be visible in the area throughout the day and may settle into valleys overnight.

More than 140 runners competed at the 12th annual Hotchkiss Cross Country meet last Saturday. KVNF’s Tamie Meck has this report.

The Hotchkiss girls team had 16 points for the win—securing the two best times of the day and placing four runners in the top 10. Montrose, led by Dana Shellhorn, placed second with 41 points. Paonia was third with 49 points.

The boys team also claimed the top two times to win the team title with 22 points. Second-place Palisade had 33 points, and Montrose was third with 42 points.

Delta BOCC Hearing on Hen Houses, Round 2

Yesterday afternoon, the Delta County Commissioners took additional evidence and testimony on two applications for laying hen operations in the county. One of them, Western Slope Layers, has been operating for a few months already on Powell Mesa. KVNF’s Ariana Brocious reports that the hearing was required after a district court sent the commissioners original approval of both applications back to the county for further review.
