BLM Seeks Comment On Gunnison Sage-Grouse

The Gunnison sage-grouse is being considered for the Endangered Species List.

It is estimated there are 4,800 Gunnison sage-grouse left. The largest population of the species, about 4,000 birds, inhabits the Gunnison Basin. 

The Bureau of Land Management wants the public to help it identify conservation measures to protect the sage-grouse on federal lands in Colorado and Utah.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended the BLM adopt additional conservation measures for the bird.

The comments are due to the BLM by August 22.

Natl. Park Service Sites Bring Millions of Dollars to Western Slope, Report Finds

Visitors to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park spent $10.2 million in communities near the site last year, according to a federal report.

A new report found areas managed by the National Park Service received over 273 million visitors last year and those visitors spent $14.6 billion in local gateway communities.

The NPS report found tourism at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area had an economic impact of $43.5 million in 2013.

Feds: Weekly Wages Highest In Arapahoe, Lowest In San Juan

Average weekly wages in the majority of U.S. counties were below the national average of $958, according to new federal data.  

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2013 San Mateo County in California had the highest average weekly wage at $1,983 and Delta County in Texas had the lowest with $378. 

Colorado's Arapahoe County had the highest average weekly wage at $1,116 followed by Boulder County where the average wage was a dollar less.

Colorado Unemployment Continues To Fall

The state's unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent in June. It's below the national average of 6.1 percent. 

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment said the last time the state's unemployment rate was 5.5 percent or lower was October 2008 when the rate was 5.3 percent. 

Nonfarm payroll jobs increased by over 3,000 from May to June to 2,446,800 jobs, according to the department. Colorado has seen 32 consecutive months of payroll job gains.

Hundreds of Bikers Flock To Paonia For BMW Motorcycle Rally

The 43rd annual Top O' The Rockies Rally brings hundreds of motorcycle riders to Paonia.

Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of BMW motorcycle riders in the North Fork Valley over the next four days

Many of them are here for the 43rd annual Top O’ The Rockies Rally

Mark Lee is one of hundreds of BMW rider that have descended on Paonia for the event.  

"I live in Silverton and I thought I’d come down and see the other bikes," Lee said. He owns a 1975 BMW R90/6. 

"It’s a fairly old motorcycle, but its been rebuilt and it’s running really strong," Lee said.
