Local Motion: Celebrating the Winter Solstice with Craig Child's "Dark Night"

For this year's winter solstice, the darkest night of the year, people filled the seats of the Paradise Theatre in Paonia for the 5th annual performance of Craig Childs' "Dark Night," a multimedia and spoken-word extravaganza celebrating the time of year when "the snakes of winter coil tightly around us," as Childs describes it.

Western Slope Skies 12/20/13

As the holidays approach, the days shorten, bringing with them our glorious Western Slope night skies.  Joining us to celebrate the season is a brilliant cluster of stars, called the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters. 

Rising on our eastern horizon, the Pleiades first appears as a cloud-like thumbprint.  As your eyes adapt to the darkness, you’ll be able to pick out point-like stars, as many as six or seven.

Christmas Tree Hunting In Pike National Forest

It’s an annual tradition in the Rocky Mountain Region for folks to search for holiday trees in the National Forests.  

KRCC’s Maggie Spencer recently set out into the Pikes Peak Ranger District with fire prevention officer Dawn Sanchez and found the Gurzi’s of Colorado Springs on the hunt for their tree. She brought back this audio postcard.

Ouray County Mine Cited for Nearly 100 Safety Violations

Update Friday, December 20: According to the Watch newspaper, MSHA says the 97 citations handed out to Star Mine Operations in the first week of December were issued during so-called "spot" inspections, and weren't issued as violations that contributed to the deaths of two men at the Revenue-Virginius mine in late November.
