What is "Pass the Mic" all About?

"Pass the Mic" is a youth storytelling and news corps program developed by KVNF community radio in Paonia, Colorado, in partnership with the North Fork Heart & Soul Project. Over the course of two years, 14 young reporters will be assigned to a "beat" reporting on a North Fork industry. Youth participants learn the skills of how to produce interviews and stories in a multi-media context, and will be supported in presenting their final projects to the valley.

MAKE HIM DANCE!

This just in!

The "wooden, dancing, mannequin, puppet guy" near Jeff's desk in the KVNF office has joined the cause! In a mysterious turn of events, he showed up yesterday with a hand-written note of his very own, proclaiming that he, "Will dance for pledges"! Who could turn down such a generous offer of support from our loyal friend.

Make a pledge! See him dance! Maybe a little stop motion animation? For the right price?

State Tourism Conference Launches

The state’s tourism industry kicks off a three-day annual conference today in Steamboat Springs. State officials say they’ll take a look at better ways to market the state, but as Bente Birkeland reports, they’ll also discuss messaging, especially in the face of uncontrollable events such as wildfires.

Colorado TV Viewers Tire Of New Mexico Political Ads

It’s election season, and for anyone who turns on the television that means being bombarded with political ads and information. Now imagine those ads coming from candidates you can’t even vote for. That’s the case for some people in southwest Colorado who can only get New Mexico television. As Bente Birkeland reports, the lack of Colorado TV has been a major complaint in the region for decades, but especially flares up this time of year.

House District 61 DEBATE

  This is the debate between candidates for State House District 61, which, after redistricting, includes Summit, Lake, Pitken, and parts of Gunnison and Delta counties. There are actually five candidates for this race, but three were present at the Club 20 debate: Democratic Incumbent Millie Hamner, Independent Kathleen Curry and Republican Debra Irvine. Derek Wagner, Director of Special Projects at Colorado Mesa University, moderated the debate.

Two Fires Burning North of Hotchkiss

Two wildfires are currently burning north of Hotchkiss this afternoon. Both fires are believed to be caused by lightning as the area received numerous lightning strikes during the past 24 hours. Smoke may be visible in the area throughout the day and may settle into valleys overnight.

Presidential Debate Analysis

Coloradans across the state turned out for watch parties last night, as President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor squared off in their first debate at the University of Denver. Statehouse reporter Bente Birkeland attended a watch party in downtown Denver. She talked to fellow reporters and voters about the debate’s impact and whether it lived up to expectations.
