For every miner, there’s a family – and in the best cases, the family offers a support system that allows the miner to go into the dark to work various shifts under sometimes dangerous conditions, sleep during the day, adapt to various clocks and take it in stride when there’s a disruption of work or routine.

KVNF’s Marty Durlin spoke to someone who’s managed it for decades.

Delta County Health Department's Koehler Talks About Sequestration Cuts

Delta County Health Officer Bonnie Koehler’s office window is decorated with wands – she needs “magic” to do her job.

Municipalities, agencies and organizations are beginning to glimpse what the Sequestration – a round of budget cuts imposed by Congress – means to the rest of the country. 

Delta County Health Officer Bonnie Koehler told commissioners yesterday that the sequestration has taken a whack out of a crucial fund, the Community Services Block Grant that pays for some family planning services (excluding abortions), along with emergency medications for those who can’t afford them.

Carrie started at KUNM as a volunteer in the front office, and soon after her arrival she became a regular substitute in the news department. Carrie is a graduate of Clemson University and a South Carolina native; however, she has fallen in love with the natural beauty and hospitality of the Southwest. In addition to her duties in the newsroom, she spends her free time hiking and skiing with her husband. Carrie's career in broadcasting is just beginning, and she hopes to pursue her passion for this field by continuing to host and report for New Mexico's Community Powered Public Radio.

State Senate Committee Passes Gun Measures

The gun debate was front and center at the state capitol yesterday as proposals already approved in the house made their way to senate committees. It was a marathon day of testimony that also included debate on three new Democratic-backed bills. Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.
