Tamie Meck provides a weekly sports report for KVNF. With camera in hand, she travels throughout Delta County and beyond to photograph athletes in action and interview players and coaches, a beat she also covers for the weekly Delta County Independent newspaper. In addition to her weekly reports, Tamie was also KVNF’s eyes and ears at this year’s regional and state tournaments for wrestling and basketball.

Delta county athletes set four records Saturday at the annual Frank Woodburn Invitational track and field meet in Grand Junction .


Cedaredge's Reid Gates cleared 6 feet, 8 inches, to claim the meet high jump record, and sailed 21 feet, 9 and a quarter inches to reset the record in the long jump. Teammate Austin Williams fell short of a meet record in the shot put, but jumped to the top of the 3A state rankings in the event with a winning throw of 51 feet, 2 inches.

After giving away a run in the top of the first and allowing a second run in the top of the second, Paonia got down to business Tuesday night. The Eagles hit three homeruns and 12 RBIs to defeat visiting Nucla, 16-5, in game one of a non-conference double header.

In local high school sports, there's a long-standing tradition of celebrating state champions with a parade through town. On Wednesday, Paonia was honored for earning a second consecutive state title in wrestling.

At the Pepsi Center in Denver last week, Paonia had more wrestlers medal than most teams brought to the tournament. Head coach Andy Pipher worked his way through the weight classes Wednesday, surrounded by his team and from atop Paonia's Ladder One fire truck.

The state wrestling championship is just five weeks away. And while you'd have to travel to the Front Range to see those games, KVNF’s Tamie Meck reports that there are several opportunities in the coming days to see some of the best wrestlers in the state close to home.

The Paonia Eagles beat out 38 teams to win last weekend's Warrior Classic wrestling tournament. The prestigious all-class tournament attracts teams from throughout the state, Utah, Wyoming and Arizona. KVNF sports reporter Tamie Meck has more.

Four prep football teams in the KVNF listening area have qualified for the state playoffs, and the Hotchkiss girls cross country team claimed the state title at the 2A cross country meet in Colorado Springs. KVNF's Tamie Meck reports on these stories and more in this week's sports report.

Fall prep sports season is nearing an end, and that means playoff season is just beginning. KVNF’s Tamie Meck reports on where the action is this weekend, and how you can take a tour of this year's state cross country course and watch the races live. 

More than 140 runners competed at the 12th annual Hotchkiss Cross Country meet last Saturday. KVNF’s Tamie Meck has this report.

The Hotchkiss girls team had 16 points for the win—securing the two best times of the day and placing four runners in the top 10. Montrose, led by Dana Shellhorn, placed second with 41 points. Paonia was third with 49 points.

The boys team also claimed the top two times to win the team title with 22 points. Second-place Palisade had 33 points, and Montrose was third with 42 points.

It’s been a busy week for local prep sports teams. KVNF’s sport reporter Tamie Meck has these highlights.

After a five-year hiatus, the rivalry between the Delta and Montrose football teams was resurrected last Friday, when Montrose junior Angelo Youngren scored three touchdowns and kicked five extra points in the Indians’ 35-0 routing of Delta. Montrose held Delta to just 84 yards rushing and 49 yards passing.

The Olathe Pirates will try for their first win of the season Friday night when they host Grand Valley.
