Colorado State University is surveying farmers and travelers for a study on agritourism.

Earlier this year, nearly 800 farmers across Colorado received a questionnaire from CSU’s Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

The survey asks producers about agritourism. The university wants to know what portion of their business comes from the industry, how they attract tourists and what challenges they face.

The study is partnership between CSU and the University of California, Davis.

More than 1,000 farmers in the Golden State also got a similar survey.

Researchers plan to compare Colorado’s agritourism industry to California’s.

Additionally, the universities will survey travelers.

CSU professor Dawn Thilmany explains the goals of the project.

“We hope to learn a little bit about what drives travelers to consider agritourism," she says. "We hope to learn a little bit from the producers about how they’re making agritourism work in their operations. And then we’re also trying to learn about how communities might benefit and interactive with agritourism for their broader tourism goals.”

Thilmany says the Colorado producer survey is wrapping up and the tourist portion will launch later this month.

She says researchers hope to release some findings from the study this summer and publish a preliminary report towards the end of the year.
