Preschool Program Focuses On The Brain

Child therapist Kathy Hegberg developed the program "Focused Kids." It teaches young kids how their brain works and it's being used at low-income preschools in the Roaring Fork Valley.

A growing education program in the Valley is teaching preschoolers how their brain works so they can focus on learning. The “Focused Kids” program is being taught to low income, mostly Latino kids, in a unique preschool. As Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports, this new program is happening inside a school bus.

Antibiotics Prescribed For Children Twice As Often As Needed

When your child has an earache or a bad cold, it's hard to think that there's not much you can offer beyond Tylenol and sympathy. But most of those infections are mostly caused by viruses that don't respond to antibiotics, a study finds.

Just 27 percent of acute respiratory tract infections are caused by bacteria, researchers at Seattle Children's Hospital found. That means that more than two-thirds are viral and antibiotics don't help.

Colorado Ranks In The Middle On Child Well-Being Report

Colorado ranked 22nd this year on the Annie E. Casey Foundation report that assesses child well-being.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation has released its annual report that assesses child well-being in the United States.

The publication ranked states on overall child welfare in four main categories: economic well-being, education, health, and family and community. 

This year Massachusetts, Vermont, and Iowa ranked top on the list for child well-being while Nevada, New Mexico, and Mississippi ranked lowest.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, KVNF's Brian Cambria stopped in at Memorial Hall in Hotchkiss to talk with Marsha Grant and Toni Hanna during a volunteer-heavy event to wrap Christmas presents for children of the North Fork Valley. He captured an audio postcard to kick off the Christmas season.
