Governments and organizations across the Western Slope say slow and unreliable broadband is hindering economic development. That’s why communities across the region want voter support this fall on measures that would allow them to try and address the issue.

Two Colorado communities hard-hit by the downturn in the coal industry received federal grants last week to help diversify their economies.

The Obama administration awarded Region 10, an organization of six counties on the Western Slope, a $1.2 million grant. Moffat County also got $50,000.

Over the past two years, hundreds of coal miners in Delta and Gunnison counties lost their jobs.

The decline in the coal industry has affected western Colorado. That’s why Region 10, an association of local governments, hired Utah-based consulting firm Better City.

The company is analyzing ways to foster economic growth in the area. And, the firm recently unveiled its first recommendations on how to do that.

In 2010, 10 percent of Colorado’s population was over the age of 65.

The state ranked fourth lowest in the nation for people in this demographic. However, this age group is rapidly growing according to the Colorado Demography Office.

It’s projected this age cohort will more than double to nearly 1.3 million people over the next 20 years.

Region 10 is an organization of governments that serves six counties on the Western Slope.  It funds services and resources for senior citizens. The organization recently wrapped up a community conversation series where it got feedback from seniors.  KVNF's Laura Palmisano spoke to Eva Veitch the director of Region 10's Community Living Services about what was learned from the meetings.

With a region like the North Fork so dependent on one or two industries, layoffs like the one at Bowie can be devastating to the local economy.

A lack of access to high-speed internet is an issue for rural communities on the Western Slope.

Region 10, an organization of governments that serves the area, is trying to address this problem.

The organization recently got a $100,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to make a proposal on how to improve broadband access in six counties: Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel.

There’s good news out of Montrose, or really, out of Washington DC.

The federal government just awarded a quarter of a million dollars to Region 10, a Montrose based economic development organization. The grant was awarded by the Economic Development Administration, or the EDA.  KVNF's Jake Ryan spoke with Jay Stooksberry, the Regional Development Coordinator for Region 10.
