Delta County Expands Hazmat Facilities

  A few years ago, an 8,000 gallon gas tanker clipped a curb and tipped over in near Delta, spilling gasoline. Now, Delta County is more able to respond to hazardous materials spills like that one. Delta County’s emergency manager Rob Fiedler reported the news to Delta County Commissioners on Monday. KVNF’s Marty Durlin has more.

West End School District Wins BEST Grant

The West End School District has seen its enrollment continue to drop over the last couple decades, and has had trouble keeping school facilities up to code. This year, the district was awarded a nearly 13 million dollar BEST grant from the State of Colorado. BEST grants — which stands for Building Excellent Schools Today— provide matching money for school districts that can’t afford building repairs on their own.

Delta BOCC Hearing on Hen Houses, Round 2

Yesterday afternoon, the Delta County Commissioners took additional evidence and testimony on two applications for laying hen operations in the county. One of them, Western Slope Layers, has been operating for a few months already on Powell Mesa. KVNF’s Ariana Brocious reports that the hearing was required after a district court sent the commissioners original approval of both applications back to the county for further review.

Local News: Hotchkiss Fire Protection District

The Hotchkiss Fire Protection District has been busy this year. They’ve already sent crew members out to major fires around the state: Sunrise Mine, Lower North Fork, High Park and Pine Ridge. But they’re busy close to home, too. KVNF’s Ariana Brocious spoke to Hotchkiss Fire Chief Doug Fritz about fires and fire danger, as the toll on lives and homes in Colorado continues to grow.

Local News: Fire Bans Increase

Local governments and federal agencies are upping the fire restrictions across much of the Western Slope. KVNF’s Ariana Brocious reports that continued hot, dry and windy weather, low humidity and several large fires already burning within the state have caused fire managers to effectively ban anything that might cause a spark.

High Park Fire Update: Hugh Carson

Hugh Carson is the deputy air operations branch director on the High Park Fire, and also a KVNF DJ. Carson is responsible for aviation assets, strategy and tactics on this fire. KVNF’s Ariana Brocious spoke with Carson yesterday about his operations so far.

For those who aren’t aware, in 1994 the lightning-sparked Wake fire burned more than 3800 acres of pinion-juniper about four miles northeast of Hotchkiss.
