New Music

Music Director Candy Pennetta  tells us about the new music to hit KVNF every week, and gives us her top pick for the week.

Jah Works / Believe / Riddim House: They are based in Baltimore but they take you right back  to the yard in Jamaica with their lively rhythms, stellar lyrics and island vocals - Gotta love the good Reggae...

Michael Franti & Spearhead / SoulRocker / Fantasy: HipHop, Reggae, Rock, Poetry, Dance, Politics; it is all here as it always with this relentless songwriter and his stellar band - He reminds us that a "SoulRocker is: One who lives from the heart, with compassion for all, and possesses a tenacious enthusiasm for music, life and the planet..." Hmmm...

Ana Popovic / Trilogy / ArtisteXclusive: She is Serbian born, based in Memphis, and her Blues Funk Rock Guitar is universal - With a few guests (Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Rapper Al Kapone...) on her new 3 CD release there is a wide range ("Morning,"  "MidDay" & "Midnight") of  moods and music.

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers / Rehab Reunion / 429 Records: Playing dulcimer and adding vocals lends a new bent to the Bruce Hornsby sound, and his "Noisemakers" back him up in supreme fashion. Bring in Mavis Staples on a duet ("Celestial Railroad") and Justin Vernon on vocal in the background ("Over The Rise"), and you may have a new favorite 10 track CD.

Silva / Jupiter / Six Degrees: The young Brazilian vocalist's 3rd release creates a minimalist sound, ironically filled with a warm, love song sense and hints of Bossa Nova, R&B, HipHop, Jazz, Electronica and Pop. Perfect for a rainy day, or a sunny day...

Boxer Rebellion / Ocean By Ocean / Absentee: The London based quartet has been around for 15 years and with a lead singer from Tennessee their 5th release transcends genre and location with an exquisite sound...

Ziggy Marley / Ziggy Marley / Tuff Gong: He has won 7 Grammy Awards,  has made his father proud and with 12 new tracks he will  make you happy...

Santana / IV / Santana IV Records: With the Woodstock Era classic lineup of players plus newer members, the legendary group led by Carlos Santana and his American/Latin Rock/Jazz/World/Fusion sound have 16 all new tracks and with Ronald Isley on vocals on 2 tunes, that sound is grander than ever!

Allen Stone / Radius / ATO: The young Blue Eyed Soul Singer from Washington released "Radius" in 2015, but with 7 additional tracks on the new  CD, the "Hippie With Soul" shows off the Stevie Wonder/Marvin Gaye/Meters/ Bill Withers influence with 20 "Get Up And Dance" tunes...

Allen Stone - Radius - ATO: The young Blue Eyed Soul Singer from Washington  put out "Radius' in 2015 and it remains a strong release but with 7 additional tracks in 2016, the  "Hippie with Soul" brings his Stevie Wonder/Marvin Gaye/Meters/Bill Withers influence to a new high with 20 "Get Up and Dance" tunes...

Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros / PersonA / Community Music: The 10 musicians express their true talent on the 4th CD with 10 tunes that stretch and expand and will embrace and inspire via Virtuoso Guitar, Piano, Drums, Vocals, Horns, Organs, Bass, Marimba, Timpanis, & their trademark Magical Song Writing...

French Horn Rebellion / Foolin' Around / FHR: 2 brothers making great music!

An incredible array of music for the week! David Bowie, John Trudell, Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell, Basia Bulat, DJDS - Gotta Pick One:

The James Hunter Six / Hold On / Daptone: The label is stellar and only features the cream of the crop - James Hunter is a Soulful R&B master and stretches on this one with a sweet taste of  Rock, Bossa Nova and a whole lot of "Get Up And Dance" music.

Sugar's Pick For Week Of January 18, 2016

Boss Selection / Volume 1 / Orange Stella: Producer/Recording Artist Sunny Levine brings together 12 tunes (Riding on A Love Train, Wouldn't It Be Wild, Flip & ReWind...) and his dream lineup of artists (Rashida Jones, Pete Yorn, James Gadson, Hugh Masekela...) to create a broad sweep of the musical spectrum.

Sugar's Pick November 16, 2015:

Givers / New Kingdom / Glassnote: Lafayette, Louisiana is the home base for the "AfroBeat, Dancey Pants, Indie Pop, Love Music" - Gotta give it a listen...

Sugar's Pick For Week Of November 9, 2015

Ephemerals / Chasin Ghosts / Jalapeno: The 7 piece Group, based in Classic Soul, shifts to Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Funk and back again via a NY/ International/Urban/London scene. Their breakthru album, "Nothing Is Easy" was a favorite and they have created another rich and deep blend of genres and sound.

Sugar's Pick for the Week of November 2, 2015:

Billy Gibbons & The BFG's / Perfectamundo / Concord:   ZZ Top's legendary Guitarist & Vocalist spent a little time as a Latin Percussionist  student of Tito Puente and he blends that Cuban-Afrom sensibility with his Blues ridden Rock on this first solo release. Lots to listen to.

No New Releases For Week of December 8, 2014

"I caught a plane to Denver - your eyes had turned to stone."

The opening track for Alela Diane’s fifth full-length, About Farewell, is a farewell. A winter’s-gone-by reminiscence of you thinking about her, leaving me in the snow, the sort of melancholy low-lit melody that fans of Diane’s early work are bound to praise as a return to roots, a coming full circle. But this record’s plain-stated heartache is anything but a rekindling of old flames and reliable fingerpicking.

The Yawpers hail from Boulder, Colorado. They are mostly a rock and roll band but since there is a mandolin on a couple of songs I guess they get filed in the Country section.  They aren’t country. If anything, there is a roots vibe that fits. They play acoustic guitars and have no bassist and don’t need or want one. A harmonica player was added a year or so ago to the lineup to round out the 4 piece. The sound is big and raw-the band makes a big sound by the drummer using two floor toms and huge kick drum.

New Releases Jan 14, 2013

Released 2012 Nonesuch Records

Welcome to the swamp! The last of the Trichnologists (it’s in the left hand) is back with an amazing album, filled with voodoo, revolutionary politics, religion, and chants.

Wax Tailor // Dusty Rainbow From The Dark

Dec 11, 2012

Released 09.18.2012 Le Plan Records

Wax Tailor could arguably be one of the best and most under rated DJ’s around.   This complex and genius concept album demands your attention as it winds you up and draws you into its bad ass breaks and grooves.  Sit down in a dark room and listen to this one by yourself!

Skipping Girl Vinegar // Keep Calm Carry The Monkey

Dec 11, 2012

Released

Don’t let the name of the band fool you – this is a sweet album!   Full of surprises with sounds reminiscent of Joy Division and The Avett Brothers.  Put this CD on and listen to great music – from end to end.

The Heavy // The Glorious Dead

Dec 11, 2012

Released 8/21/2012  Counter Records

Rock & Roll album of the year?   The Heavy lay down a driving intensity in this CD  - with multiple layers of rock and roll.   Undercurrent vibes from Jack White, Led Zeppelin, The Black Keys and others as the album explodes with creativity.   It’s funky, punky, jazzy, and makes me wanna ROCK & ROLL!

Released 11/19/12 by Atlantic Records

Do you like Led Zeppelin? If so, you will love this live recording. Just remember, this is LZ, so turn it up!  "Celebration Day" is a tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, one of the movers and shakers of the music world for over half a century, and this recording is likely the last time LZ will play. Who knows?
